Personal Reflection

I chose to write about the topic of violence because all I hear about is violent things happening to people i know. I also wanted to talk about something i can relate to. i can talk about violence because it is something that I don't like, especially if it is happening to women. As a man it is cowarldy behavior to hit a young lady, period. Looking at images of battered women and reading stories about some who have been abused had changed the way I look at men who abuse women. Ii made me have a deeper passion of disliking them even more. The overall blogging thing was cool for me because it gave me a chance to be heard and hear other peoples opinions as well. It also is something that I think i'll like doing outside of schoolwork about stuff that goes on in my everyday life and that i think others can relate to. My respect for women has risen after doing these blogs. I basically chose this topic because I seen my sisters and cousins deal with in their previous relationships and I couldnt do anything about it because i was too small. Now that im older i can do something about it i feel as if people need to hear my opinion about the topic. I know that if a hit a lady i would put myself in the statistics of women beaters. As a young man the last thing i would want to do is place myself in that category. the blogging was a new experience for me and i really enjoyed it. :-)

CURRENT EVENTS

Most people have defined domestic violence to include everything from saying unkind or demeaning words, to grabbing a person's arm, to hitting, kicking, choking, or even murdering. Domestic violence most often refers to violence between married or cohabiting couples. Studies indicate that the incidence of domestic violence among homosexual couples is approximately equivalent to that found among heterosexual couples. The most recent event in today’s world of domestic disputes is between two upcoming R&B icons, Chris Brown and Rihanna. The allegations against singer Chris brown took an even more serious turn February 9 when TMZ reported that the victim in the case was the 19-year-old singer's longtime girlfriend, Rihanna. Brown gave Rihanna a vicious and continuous beating. He allegedly started by shoving Rihanna's head against the passenger window, then punched her in the face numerous times while still driving. The beating reportedly splattered blood on Rihanna's clothing and the car interior. Days later, a gruesome police photo of Rihanna leaked to the media and it showed her with a bruised, scratched face and a split lip. It was clear evidence of a continuous pummeling, not some impassioned slap in the heat of the moment. Even more shocking details are that this may not have been Chris Brown's first time abusing Rihanna. Rihanna told the LAPD that Brown had attacked her several times in the past, and the assaults were gradually becoming more violent. Though rihanna forgave him, Brown still can face up to 4 years behind bars.

My thoughts: I just think that chris brown was wrong for hitting rihanna .I also think that he is a hypocrite because he faulted his stepfather for hitting his mother and he at a later date hit his significant other. Or it could be that he just follows in the footsteps of his stepfather because thats all he seen. it still doesnt justify the fact that he hit a lady. the only question is how can you fault some for doing something that you later did?

HISTORY

In the year 753 B.C. during the reign of Romulus in Rome, wife beating is accepted and condoned under The Laws of Chastisement. Under these laws, the husband has absolute rights to physically discipline his wife. Since by law, a husband is held liable for crimes committed by his wife, this law was designed to protect the husband from harm caused by the wife's actions. These laws permit the husband to beat his wife with a rod or switch as long as its circumference is no greater than the girth of the base of the man's right thumb, hence "The Rule of Thumb." The tradition of these laws is perpetuated in English Common Law and throughout most of Europe. In those days it was like saying the woman had no greater significance than that of a child. it's almost just like saying the woman was there to please the man and bow down to him at any costand if she didnt behave like that of a child she was beaten with a rod. In the middle, ages,In Europe, squires and noblemen beat their wives as regularly as they beat their serfs; the peasants faithfully followed their lords' example. The Church sanctions the subjection of women. Priests advise abused wives to win their husbands' good will through increased devotion and obedience. The habit of looking upon women as a species apart, without the same feelings and capacity for suffering which men possess, becomes inbred during the Middle Ages. In a Medieval theological manual, a man is given permission to "castigate his wife and beat her for correction. once again it was advised that the woman did what the husband said in order to stay in his good grace. in this era a woman would constantly be beaten because we live in a time where women who are more independent tend to be disrespectful because they feel as if they dont need a man for anything. in the old days it was okay to beat a woman where as today it is totally opposite unless a woman is okay with the fact that her husband beats her.

credible vs. non-credible

The difference between credible sources and non credible sources is that non credible sources are sites that you go on and the information that is given can be true but it isn’t all facts. Basically what I am saying is that information from a non credible source is getting someone else’s point of view meaning that that the information given isn’t necessarily all facts. An example of a non credible source is wikipedia. reason being is because it doesn’t have an author and because it doesn’t have edu. A credible source on the other hand would be a web-site such as http://www.chicagotribune.com/services/newspaper/premium/chi-0412190514dec19,0,5883313.story is because it has footnotes and author and it has advertising and it has an author as well, it also give numerical data that is valid. I think in most cases a credible source is something or someone whose words, ideas, or notions are considered to be veritable and factual and vice-versa for a none credible source. A none credible source is something that isn’t factual and is basically someone’s opinion such as getting your information off of a blog site. on a blog site it is really just posting your thoughts about a particular not giving any valid information just thoughts and opinions and any true info. that is what seperates credible sources from non credible sources.

why i chose this topic

As a child I grew up in a house of women. In that house I've seen my sisters become victims to the hands of their abusive boyfriends. when I see this even today as young man I get very angry . any man who hits a woman I s automatically labeled by me as a coward. the reason why I chose this topic to write about is because of the things I've seen as a child . My uncle was killed when I was about five years old by the local gang members by my house. I wonder everyday my life what little boy or girl sees their mom or sister and any women in their life being beaten, or if any child has seen has witnessed the death of his/her family member due to gun crimes or the hands of some gang banger. I believe that it is wrong to kill someone or even put their lives in danger. Honestly I think that violence is basically pointless. When you are violent there are two possible things that can happen to you, either you’ll die or go to jail. My reason for posting this blog is to get people to see how preserve violence. in this year alone 27 Chicago public school students have died because of violence. I chose to write about this topic because I believe it is something that everyone can relate to and has witnessed at least one time in their life whether i happened to them or some one they know. maybe it hasn’t happened to the them , they’ve probably seen it television. I also what to know what the purpose of violence really is because I think it has no moral at all. I really don’t agree with violence even if it is war because endangering some ones life for any reason is just wrong. I also chose this topic because I seen it a lot as child and I can really talk about something that I have witnessed and something I can talk about.

VIOLENCE: KNOWN AND UNKNOWNS

Most violent crimes occur in urban neighborhoods and that they are either gang related or domestic. According to research most domestic crimes happen between male and female where the male hits the women because his masculinity is threatened and he wants to feel powerful and superior to the female. I also know that in most gang related crimes rival gangs fight over territory or because another gang member is not of the same background. Basically meaning if they don't abide by the same guidelines or don't have the same " chief" or leader they wont get along, causing tension and the well being of another person to be put in danger. Males experienced violence attributed to gang members at higher rates than those of females. Basically males are more involved in gang related crimes than females are. What is it? I like to know why are males more involved in gang related crimes than females are. Gang activity is influenced by Rap music and MTV music videos. I want to why kid as think it is cool to wear baggy clothes .In most neighborhoods a kid has to make one of two choices; join a gangs, or become a victim of it. i know that violence top one of the top reasons for death among African American males besides sexually transmitted diseases. is it because black men put themselves in situations where their lives are at stake? violent crimes have placed lots of people in jail . I have to question myself and say is being tough worth losing your life or going to jail?
